Mumbai meat ban reduced to two days

Mumbai, Sept 11 (IBNS): Amid criticisms, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday moved a proposal to reduce the number of days to ban on the slaughter and sale of meat in Mumbai to two days, reports said.

The  controversial four-day ban on sale of meat began in Mumbai on Thursday morning.

The issue has placed the Sena and the BJP, partners in the Maharashtra government, in a political stand-off.

The ban has been ordered by Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, controlled by the BJP,  in view of a Jain festival and fast.

The order  said the slaughter and sale of meat in Mumbai would be prohibited on four days - September 17 to 20.

Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh has declared an eight-day ban on sale of meat to become the fourth BJP-ruled state to take such an action.

The Chhattisgarh government announced the ban on Thursday making it effective till September 17.

Simlar ban had already been imposed in parts of Mumbai, Rajasthan and Gujarat on account of various festivals, including that of the Jain community.
