New Delhi: Indian PM Narendra Modi on Monday paid tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti.
"I bow to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti. His outstanding leadership and emphasis on social welfare has been inspiring people for generations," Modi tweeted.

Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, he was formally crowned as the chhatrapati (emperor) of his realm at Raigad.
The Maharashtra government lists February 19 as a holiday commemorating Shivaji Jayanti.
