Rishi Kapoor was a powerhouse of talent: Narendra Modi

Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said he is deeply saddened by the death of Indian actor Rishi Kapoor who had charmed movie lovers for generations.

"Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of veteran Hindi film actor, Shri Rishi Kapoor. The talented actor essayed many roles with aplomb & was popular for his romantic films. In his passing away, the nation lost a beloved son and film industry lost a gem," Naidu tweeted.

Apart from Naidu, politicians across India shared their thoughts on the death of the actor.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted; "This is a terrible week for Indian cinema, with the passing of another legend, actor Rishi Kapoor. A wonderful actor, with a huge fan following across generations, he will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family, friends & fans all over the world, at this time of grief."

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the sudden demise of actor Rishi Kapoor. He entertained several generations of Indians throughout his career. What a terrible loss.. My condolences to the grieving family. May God bless his soul."

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said: "The sudden demise of actor Rishi Kapoor is shocking. He was not only a great actor but a good human being. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans. Om Shanti."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said: "Deeply shocked & saddened at the demise of the iconic & versatile film actor #RishiKapoor. A National Film Award winner, he acted in more than than 150 films. He endured his illness with dignity and grace. My condolences to his family, friends, fans & the entire film fraternity."

Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor, who had stolen millions of hearts with his spirited screen presence and lover boy roles in the 1970s through the 80s, died on Thursday morning in a Mumbai hospital, sources confirmed. He was 67.

One of the most well known Kapoors of the Kapoor clan of Bollywood, he is survived by his wife Neetu Singh Kapoor, actor son Ranbir Kapoor and daughter Riddhima Kapoor.

He was admitted in Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital on Wednesday. Rishi Kapoor was under treatment for cancer in USA earlier though it was assumed that he had recovered.

As the news broke, there was a pall of gloom in the nation under lockdown with generations of Indians expressing their grief over the demise of an actor they grew up with.

After his debut as hero in Bobby opposite Dimple Kapadia, his romantic pairing with his wife Neetu Singh Kapoor in several films of 1970s entertained the audiences of all ages. He went on to act opposite all leading ladies of Bollywood besides sharing screen space with other heroes of his time- from the legendary Amitabh Bachchan to Vinod Khanna and many more.

One of the successful Hindi film hereos exploding on the silver screen in the 70s, he had made his debut with Bobby in 1973 as a Bollywood lover boy a few years after playing a child artist in his father Raj Kapoor's film Mera Naam Joker.
