Sahitya Akademi winning author Debesh Roy passes away

Kolkata/IBNS: Sahitya Akademi winning veteran Bengali author Debesh Roy passed away here on Thursday.

He was 83.

Roy is survived by his son. His wife had died earlier.

Roy's family members said the author was admitted to a hospital near his residence in Kolkata's Baguihati.

He suffered a cardiac arrest at 10:50 pm on Thursday.

Born in Pabna (now in Bangladesh), Roy earned the Sahitya Akademi award for his novel Teesta Parer Brittanto.

Apart from writing various novels like Jajajti, Manus Khun Kore Kano, Samay Asamayer Brittanto, Borisaler Jogen Mondal, he was a contributor to Parichay Patrika as an editor for a long time.

Mourning Roy's death, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "Debesh Roy's demise has created a huge vacuum in the field of literature. I am offering my condolences to Debesh Roy's family and well wishers."
