Guwahati, May 14 (IBNS): Calling for an early reform in the education sector to instill in the students an innovative thinking process, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday had launched the ‘Lakshya’ programme in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

An initiative of Dibrugarh district administration, ‘Lakshya’ programme aims to make learning more easy and attractive by utilizing online academic resources, digital classroom etc.

This programme also envisages imparting career counselling to students of class IX to XII covering 145 government and Provincilized High and Higher Secondary Schools of Dibrugarh district.

A brain child of Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri, ‘Lakshya’ will also encompass ‘Prastuti’, an initiative under which students appearing for HSLC and HSSLC would also be prepared for the final examinations with mentoring and hand holding exercise.

Speaking on the occasion, the Assam CM underlined teachers’ role in shaping the future of students and urged them to take the profession as service to the society.

“Teachers are the role models to their students. They must take their profession not as a mere job but as a service to the society,” Sonowal said.

“A teacher’s job is not merely to produce successful students. The teachers have a responsibility to create good human beings with high moral integrity,” the Assam CM advocated adding that the state Govt. is striving hard to develop a smart education system and for that purpose, the teachers must upgrade their skills in tune with the modern methodologies.

Informing about various schemes of both the union and state government for developing the academic sector of the state, such as distribution of free text books, free admission at school and colleges, Sonowal said that no government scheme could be successful without whole-hearted cooperation from the people and urged all sections of the society to take full advantage of all the programmes.

Referring to the recently concluded ‘Gunotsav’ programme, the Assam CM expressed the view that the programme helped the Govt. to identify the loopholes in the educational institutions and contributed profusely for introducing new interventions to improve quality of teaching in schools.

Further Sonowal exhorted the teachers to perform the role of a true friend, philosopher and guide to the students and urged them not to confine their role within the fore-walls of academic institutions alone.

“Teachers have a duty to identify talents in their students. They must motivate the students so that they could excel in sports and cultural field as well,” Sonowal advised the teachers.

The Assam CM also urged the teachers to inculcate good hygiene practices among students.

Motivated by the Prime Minister’s three mantras for development, “Reform, Perform and Transform”, the Assam CM stated that the state Government is fully committed to bring about an all round development in Assam with opportunities for equal growth to all.

Noted academician Dr Nagen Saikia in his speech expressed the view that the ‘Lakshya’ programme would successfully guide students in making right career choices and contribute meaningfully to the society.

Dr Saikia also stressed on modernizing the teaching methodology of English language so that students of Govt. schools could successfully compete with other students.

However, he equally emphasised on teaching mother language in private schools of the state as well.

Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri while speaking on the occasion informed that already a core committee is constituted to oversee the successful implementation of ‘Lakshya’ programme in the district.

She also stated that an individual database of each student would be prepared under the programme to assess their strength and weaknesses and timely and appropriate interventions would make to upgrade their skills.

The Deputy Commissioner also informed about opening of ‘Career Counselling Centre’ in each educational institution for guiding the students to make right career choices.

Minister of State, Power & Revenue Pallab Lochan Das, Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli, MLAs Prashanta Phukan, Binod Hazarika, Rituparna Baruah, Chakradhar Gogoi, Sanjay Kishan, CEM of Sonowal Kachariu Autonomous Council Dipuranjan Markari were also present in the programme.
