Coronavirus threat: Kerala govt withdraws 'State Calamity' status

Thiruvananthapuram/IBNS: The Kerala Government on Friday withdrew the "State Calamity" status, which was declared on Monday after the students from China tested positive with Novel Coronavirus.

All these three students, who had contact with each other, had returned from Wuhan in China, which is the epicentre of the virus.

The withdrawal of calamity status was announced after 67 of the 72 confirmed cases came negative.

Of the three positive cases, one patient is recovering and tested negative.

"The test results show that the situation has improved, though we will continue our intense monitoring... The first confirmed case was in close contact with five people. The second confirmed case was in close contact with one person and the third patient with two people. All of these primary contacts have tested negative. And that is a relief," minister KK Shailaja told the media.

However, about 3000 people in the state have been kept under observation, isolated at their homes.

Continuous screenings at airports and round-the-clock call centres for emergencies are operative in the state.

Meanwhile, over 600 people have been killed in the deadly Coronavirus in China. The virus has affected over 30,000 people in the country.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency following the outbreak of the virus.

In fact, the Chinese doctor, Li Wenliang, who had first warned of the epidemic outbreak, died of Coronavirus in Wuhan on Thursday.
