Kolkata: Three senior doctors battling COVID-19 succumb in a single day

Kolkata/IBNS: Three senior physicians, who were battling Covid-19 at different private hospitals in Kolkata's EM Bypass area for the past few weeks, died on Monday, reports said.

According to reports, well-known cardiologist Tapan Sinha, who was attached with Kothari Medical Centre in Kolkata's Alipore area, died at Apollo Gleneagles hospital this morning while two more renowned doctors from Kolkata's adjoining North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, General Physician Pradip Bhattacharya from Shyamnagar and Ophthalmologist Biswajit Mondal from Barrackpore, succumbed to Covid-19 infections at Medica Superspeciality Hospital and Fortis Hospital respectively on the same day.

West Bengal has registered multiple cases and Covid-19 related fatalities in the frontline corona warrior fraternity so far.

Days ago, Bengal reported Covid death of its youngest medical practitioner as 36-year-old cardiac surgeon Nitish Kumar, who was attached with R.N. Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, succumbed to coronavirus in a city private hospital.

Meanwhile, with 2,905 fresh infections and 41 more deaths reported in the last 24 hours, West Bengal's Covid-19 tally has reached 98,459, including 26,031 active cases, 2100 deaths and 70,328 discharges, reports said on Monday late evening.

According to a bulletin issued by Bengal Health and Family Welfare (WBHFW) department, in the past 24 hours, 3,208 Covid-19 patients were discharged from different health facilities across the state, taking the recovery rate to 71.43 per cent from 70.24 per cent.

Officials said that West Bengal had tested 11,32,196 samples till date with a record number of 26,297 tests conducted in 60 testing facilities in the state in the last 24 hours.

Presently, 2,829 persons are kept in government quarantine centres and 26,301 people are under home surveillance in the state while 1,564 persons are in 109 government-run safe homes.
