Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal protesting outside Amarinder Singh's house detained

| @indiablooms | Jun 15, 2021, at 08:41 pm

Chandigarh/IBNS: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal was on Tuesday afternoon detained while he was protesting outside Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh's residence here, media reports said.

Badal was demanding the sacking of Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu.

Punjab Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Jasvir Singh Garhi, whose party has recently tied up with the SAD for the next state polls, was also in the protest.

Water cannons were used at the demonstrators who were marching ahead with flags despite police barricades.

Badal has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged irregularities in the sale of anti-COVID-19 vaccines and procurement of medical kits for coronavirus patients.

The Congress government in the state was caught in the midst of a controversy after it was found that it buys Bharat Biotech's Covaxin for people aged 18 or more through its facilities and then sells a part of it to private hospitals at a higher rate, on the pretext of encouraging the vaccination process.

Facing a "vaccine scam" charge by the Opposition, the government revoked the order calling it "illogical decision".

The government had also asked the private hospitals to return the doses.
