Saifai, Nov 22 (IBNS): Oscar award winning musician A R Rahman has performed in the grand birthday celebrations for Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Even as Yadav turned 76 on Sunday, his birthday celebrations commenced a day earlier at his home village in Saifai.

Like every year, the celebrations have sparked controversy with crores being spent on the extravaganza event at a time time when Uttar Pradesh has declared 50 of its 73 districts drought-hit.

Thousand of party workers attended the event. Hundreds of welcome gates and huge hoardings have been put up on all the roads leading to Saifai.

Yadav reportedly cut a four-tier cake.

Amid sharp criticisms, Yadav's party has denied using state funds for the celebrations and claimed a committee that organizes the annual Saifai Mohatsav bore all expenses.

Former SP leader Amar Singh, who parted ways with Mulayam Singh attended the event.

But Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav gave it a miss.
