Bengal panchayat: Re-polling in 697 booths begins

Kolkata/UNI: Repolling for three-tier Panchayat in 697 booths spanning 22 districts of West Bengal began at 7 am on Monday.

The State Election Commission (SEC) on Sunday in a notification ordered repoll in altogether 697 booths, which went to three-tier Panchayat polling on Saturday.

While Murshidabad accounted for the highest number of booths of 175, Malda came close second with 110 followed by Nadia 89.

Cooch Behar accounted for 53 booths, while North 24 Parganas for 46, Uttar Dinajpur for 42, South 24 Parganas for 36, Purba Midnapore for 31, Hooghly for 29, Dakshin Dinajpur for 18, Birbhum and Jalpaiguri for 14 each, Paschim Midnapore for 10, Bankura and Howrah for 8 each, Paschim Burdwan for 6, Purba Burdwan for 3, Purulia for 4 and Alipurduar for one.

The SEC has ordered deployment of four Central force personnel at each booth.

It may be mentioned that Saturday's polling was marked by large-scale violence in which 17 people lost their lives.

Meanwhile, Governor Dr C V Ananda Bose on Sunday left for New Delhi and would call on Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday.
