BJP may become single largest party : Sharad Pawar

Mumbai, Mar 13 (IBNS): In a surprising comment from a leader who is fighting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has predicted the saffron outfit might emerge as the single largest party, media reports said.

However, Pawar stated BJP will require support of some other parties to form the government and in that case Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have his way out.

Parties which will support BJP to form a government will pick someone other than Modi as the Prime Minister, the former Maharashtra Chief Minister said.

Pawar's NCP is likely to contest the upcoming polls in an alliance with Congress to tackle the BJP-Shiv Sena combination in the western part of the country.

The NCP chief, in recent times, has also met with opposition leaders like Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal, Telegu Desam Party (TDP)'s Nara Chandrababu Naidu to chalk out plans for the united Opposition to take on BJP at the Centre.

Pawar, who has decided not to contest the 2019 polls, had also featured in Banerjee's anti-BJP rally in Kolkata on Jan 19.

The dates for the Lok Sabha polls have already been announced by the Election Commission.

The country will have seven-phase elections between Apr 11 and May 19 while counting of votes will take place on May 23.
