Crippled by air pollution, Delhi govt puts curbs on private vehicles
New Delhi, Dec 4 (IBNS): Coming under fire over the rise in air pollution level in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led state government on Friday announced that private vehicles with odd and even registration numbers will be allowed on roads only on alternate days from January.
The vehicles with number plates ending with an odd number will be allowed to ply one day and those ending with an even number the next day while the same is extended for public vehicles too.
However, this rule is not applicable on public transport.
"Every year pollution level increases in winter. For some time, odd and even numbered vehicles will run on alternate days. Alternate arrangements are being made to bolster public transport. DTC buses, Metro services will ply extra. We are still working out the modalities," KK Sharma, Delhi Principal Secretary told mediapersons.
The government informed that it hoped to cut down vehicular pollution in the state by half with this measure.
The decision was arrived at after a meeting called by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal following some recent observations by the judiciary on alarming pollution.
The Delhi High Court that living in Delhi is like "living in a gas chamber" while slamming agencies of government the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Wednesday directed the Delhi government to identify “critically polluted areas” so that immediate advisories can be issued to the public.
