Eight militant groups including JMB, HuM active in Assam: Govt
Guwahati, Dec 7 (IBNS): Eight militant groups including Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) are presently active in Assam, the Assam state government said on Monday.
Replying to a question in the floor of Assam assembly during the winter session that started on Monday, agriculture minister Rockybul Husain said for the state home department that eight extremist groups are presently in the state.
The active groups are United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), Natioanl Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit), Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT), Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO), Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA), HuM (Assam unit), CPI (Maoist), JMB (Module).
The minister said that, a total of 12001 militants of different extremist groups were arrested in the state since the year 2006.
On other hand, a total of 3990 militants of different outfit groups had laid down arms during the period.
Recently, Assam police had arrested 16 hardcore militants of JMB from different parts of the state and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition.
On Dec 4 and 5, Chirang police of BTAD area had nabbed six hadcore militants of the outfit including one of the most wanted in Bardwan blast from Chirang and Goalpara districts of Lower Assam.
