Flood situation in Assam grim, over 2.25 lakh people of 15 districts affected
Guwahati/IBNS: The flood situation in Assam has turned worse with more than 2.25 lakh people being affected in 15 districts in the state.
Following incessant rains in past few days in Assam and some parts of Arunachal Pradesh, the water levels of Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are rising and flowing above the danger level mark in many places.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 2.25 lakh people of 15 districts – Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tinsukia have been affected in the current wave of flood.
Over 91,000 people are affected in Lakhimpur district followed by 47,000 people in Majuli, 32,000 people in Dhemaji, 12,000 people in Bongaigaon, 11,000 people in Dibrugarh, 9,000 people in Tinsukia, 7,000 people in Chirang district.
512 villages under 34 revenue circles are currently under water and 16338 hectares of agricultural lands submerged by the flood waters.
The administration of the flood affected districts have opened 25 relief camps and 37 relief distribution centres and 6898 people have taken shelter in the relief camps.
56 villages in Dhemaji district, 64 villages in Majuli district and 97 villages in Lakhimpur district have been badly affected in the current wave of flood.
Many people have been forced to leave their homes, moved and took shelter in safer places after flood waters entered into their homes.
