Hardik Patel sentenced to two years in jail in 2015 Patidar riots case

Ahmedabad, July 25 (IBNS): Patidar leader Hardik Patel has been sentenced to two years in jail by a Gujarat court in connection with a 2015 riots case, media reports said.

Patel was found guilty of charges related to arson and creating a ruckus at BJP MLA Rushikesh Patel’s office.

Of the 17 people named as accused in the case, the court in Gujarat’s Mehsana found three people, including Patel, guilty. The other two are Lalji Patel, the leader of the Sardar Patel Group, and AK Patel.

In 2015, a mob of around 3000 to 5000 people vandalised BJP MLA Rushikesh Patel’s office during the Patidar reservation protests.

Hardik, who was arrested and released on bail, was barred by the court from entering Mehsana district in connection with this case. The protests demanding reservation for patidars in government jobs and educational institutions had turned violent, leaving 14 dead in police firing.

Earlier this month, he announced he would sit on an indefinite fast from August 25 in an effort to revive the reservation demand for patidars.
