IMD issues fresh rain alert in flood affected Kerala
Kochi, Aug 13 (IBNS): While the state of Kerala is still recuperating from the havoc of the floods which claimed at least 37 lives, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning of heavy rains in the state in the next 24 to 48 hours.
The torrential rainfall in the state left nearly 54,000 people homeless in the last five days.
According to the preliminary assessment by the state government, Kerala has suffered a loss of Rs 8,316 crore, media reports quoting state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday took an aerial survey of the flood affected areas. He announced a relief of Rs. 100 crore.
Vijayan also announced ex-gratia payment of Rs four lakh each to the kin of those who lost their lives in the deluge.
Many parts of northern Kerala were completely isolated by landslides and floods due to heavy rains.
In the fresh warning, the Met Department issued a 'Red alert' and asked people to be cautious.
Places in Idukki, Wayanad, Kannur, Ernakulam, Palakkad and Malappuram districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours.
The warning has asked fishermen to stay away from the Southwest and Central Arabian Sea as conditions are likely to be very rough.
The Army, Navy, Air Force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been conducting evacuation and relief operations in the flood affected areas.
