India-Afghanistan trade reset? Delhi, Kabul discuss banking, visas, ports and pharma
The India–Afghanistan Joint Working Group (JWG) on Trade, Commerce and Investment held a virtual meeting on September 1, 2026, to review issues related to bilateral trade and economic cooperation and discuss measures to further facilitate trade and strengthen commercial engagement between the two countries.
The meeting was attended by officials from India and Afghanistan, including representatives from the commerce and industry sectors, customs and regulatory authorities, and diplomatic missions.
“Key areas of discussion included trade facilitation and customs cooperation, visa facilitation for Afghan traders, banking and financial cooperation, pharmaceutical and agricultural trade, energy cooperation, investment and trade promotion, tariff concessions, cargo connectivity and port-related issues,” the Indian government said in a statement.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to strengthen institutional cooperation and pursue follow-up action in the identified areas. These include enhancing customs and data-sharing cooperation, strengthening regulatory coordination in pharmaceuticals and agriculture, improving trade connectivity, and promoting investment and business-to-business engagement.
“Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening India–Afghanistan trade, commerce and investment ties and agreed to maintain continued engagement on the issues discussed,” the statement added.
