India signs Rs. 810 crore deal for 160 advanced Airfield-Busting Weapons for IAF
The Indian Ministry of Defence on Wednesday signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) along with associated equipment for the Indian Air Force (IAF), at a total cost of ₹810.79 crore.
The contract has been placed under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category and was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on September 23, 2026.
SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb that can be launched from aircraft platforms including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30 MKI. The weapon is designed to neutralise enemy airfields from a long stand-off range.
Indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the system will have an indigenous content of 60 per cent. The programme also includes the indigenisation of key sub-systems such as the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier, further strengthening the country's defence manufacturing capabilities under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Delivery of the SAT-SAAW systems is scheduled to take place during 2027-28 and 2028-29.
The induction of the weapons is expected to enhance the operational capabilities of the IAF and strengthen the country's overall defence preparedness.
