Sood assumed the position after the completion of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal's tenure as the CBI chief on May 25.

According to the established guidelines, the CBI director is chosen for a fixed term of two years by a panel consisting of the prime minister, Chief Justice of India (CJI), and the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha.
