Kashmir: Hizbul Mujahideen suffers setback after Altaf Kachroo's death

| @indiablooms | Aug 30, 2018, at 11:32 pm

Srinagar, Aug 30 (IBNS): In a setback to Kashmiri separatist militant organisation Hizbul Mujahideen, Altaf Kachroo, the deputy field operations commander of the terror outfit, was gunned down by Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday.

Kachroo was gunned down by the police in an encounter in Muniward area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district.

The Muniward area was silent when security forces laid siege to the neighbourhood where Altaf, a resident of Kulgam district, was trapped.

Altaf was trapped along with his associate Umar Wani, who became active last year.

While interacting with the Quint, complaining about tear gas irritation, a resident said: "We were awake through the night. Not a single shot was heard till the dawn of Wednesday when intermittent firing started.

"It was difficult to know what was happening. Then we heard sloganeering followed by loud bangs and explosions."

In order to stop youth from pelting stones and help the two militants from escaping, the police had imposed curfew and barricades were placed along roads leading to Muniward.

However, the operation didn't claim any civilian life.
