Kolkata STF busts illegal firearms manufacturing unit, nine held

Kolkata, July 31 (IBNS): The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police on Monday busted an illegal arms manufacturing factory, which was being run behind a sweet shop, at Choto Serampore area in Kolkata's neighbouring North 24 Parganas district and arrested nine persons in connection with the case, officials said.

According to reports, Anti FICN (Fake Indian Currency Notes) unit of city police's STF had detained three persons, Suku Seikh (38), Md. Amjad Rayeen and Md. Abdulla (26), from city's downtown Esplanade area under Maidan Police Station limits on Monday afternoon and recovered FICN worth Rs. 1 lakh and several semi-finished firearms from their possessions.

"Acting on tip off, we nabbed two residents of Bihar and a resident of Kaliachak in West Bengal's Malda district from near Kolkata Police Paddock and Monohar Das Tarag pond at Esplanade area, while they were doing transaction of FICN and illegal firearms, and seized Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) amounting to Rs. 1 lakh of denominations 500 and 40 pieces of semi-finished country made improvised firearms from their possessions," a senior official of KP STF told IBNS.

"In pursuant to the statement of one of the three arrested, Md. Abdulla, our investigators raided a sweet shop-cum-manufacturing unit near Kankinara area in North 24 Parganas area later on Monday and unearthed an illegal firearms manufacturing factory there," the official said.

"Besides seizing 20 pieces of semi-finished country made improvised pistols, one lathe machine, two milling machines, two drilling machines, a huge amount of country made improvised fire arms parts, raw materials and instruments, we arrested six more persons from the firearms manufacturing unit," the officer added.

STF officials said that the six arrested have been identified as Md. Sabir Raien (28), Md. Shaud Alam alias Sonu (24), Md. Shanwaz alias Mister (25), Md. Faisal (24), Md. Razi alias Raju (19) and Md. Chand alias Domu (24).

"Of the six nabbed, Md. Sabir Raien hails from Navi Mumbai in Maharastra while remaining five are the residents of Munger in Bihar," a STF officer told IBNS.

Sources in the STF said that all the arrested persons have been charged under IPC sections 120B, 489B, 489C and sections 25(1)(a) and 25(1B)(a) of Arms Act.

However, they were produced at a STF special court in Kolkata on Tuesday and were remanded to STF custody for further investigation.
