Major Gogoi found guilty in Srinagar hotel case; Mehbooba Mufti says 'welcome step' by Army

Srinagar, Aug 27 (IBNS): Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday welcomed the Army's step to court martial Major Leetul Gogoi for violating rules by trying to enter a hotel in Srinagar with a young Kashmiri woman in May this year, media reports said.

Army officials said Major Gogoi has been found prima facie guilty in the incident.

Welcoming the step, former Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, "Army initiating disciplinary action against Major Gogoi is a welcome step. Only hope that unlike Pathribal and Machil fake encounters, it is taken to its logical conclusion."

The court of inquiry, which was headed by a brigadier, has found Major Gogoi guilty of "fraternizing with a woman source against existing orders", The Times Of India reported.

Major Gogoi was also involved in the "human shield" controversy in Budgum district in April, 2017.

Striking a massive row, Gogoi had used civilian named Farooq Ahmad Dar as a human shield against stone-pelters during the by-poll to the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat on Apr 9.

Later, he was also awarded for his act.
