Mamata Banerjee becomes TMC's parliamentary party chairperson ahead of her Delhi visit

Kolkata/New Delhi/IBNS: In a significant decision ahead of her Delhi visit next week, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has become the chairperson of her Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s parliamentary party.

Banerjee, a seven-term Lok Sabha MP, has served multiple ministries including key Railways in the past.

She has replaced TMC Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay to assume the post.

The announcement was made by TMC Rajya Sabha MPs Derek O'Brien and Sukhendu Sekhar Roy Friday evening.

"We are beyond proud to share that Mamata Banerjee has become chairperson of the Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party. This announcement brings the promise of a brighter future of unparalleled growth & development for India," the party has put up a Facebook post.

Banerjee's assumption of the post is significant as she, after trumping the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal elections earlier this year, is aiming to play a larger role in the Opposition to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024 General Elections.

The 66-year-old politician will hold meetings with Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind as well as various opposition leaders in Delhi.

Her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, who is also the TMC national general secretary, is already in Delhi to strategise the party's move in Parliament.

The TMC along with Congress has been cornering the Modi government since day one of Parliament's monsoon session on a number of issues including the pot-boiling snooping.
