Shillong, Feb 24 (IBNS) :  Security forces on Saturday gunned down  Meghalaya's most-wanted militant and self-styled chief of the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Sohan D Shira in an encounter in East Garo Hills district, media reports said quoting police.

According to NDTV, Sohan was active in the Garo hills of Meghalaya, which goes to polls on 27 February.

The encounter of Sohan, who carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head, came after NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma was killed in an IED attack, believed to have been  carried out by the GNLA in the same district last week.

The incident reportedly took place at Dobu A’chakpek in East Garo Hills.

Sohan was killed in the encounter with a joint team of the Garo Hills Police and Meghalaya’s Special Force-10 commandos.

Shira has been involved in many encounters before but he has managed to escape, unlike this time.
