Rahul as PM? Mamata says: ‘Don’t ask questions of this nature’

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee appears to be looking beyond Bengal, with her recent moves suggesting a renewed interest in playing a larger role within the Opposition camp.

The possibility became evident at the recently held INDIA bloc meeting and in Banerjee's interaction with reporters afterwards.

Asked whether she would support Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as the Opposition alliance's prime ministerial face for the 2029 Lok Sabha election, Banerjee avoided a direct answer.

“Don't ask questions of this nature,” she said, adding, “We are one family. We will decide when the time comes.”

‘We will decide when the time comes’

The question of the Opposition's prime ministerial face has remained a contentious issue for more than a decade.

Banerjee has repeatedly maintained that the matter should be settled at the appropriate time.

The absence of a consensus on leadership has also featured prominently in discussions about the Opposition's electoral strategy in successive Lok Sabha elections.

Banerjee's latest intervention comes as the INDIA bloc seeks to coordinate its response to the controversy surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Mamata pushes for Opposition unity

The TMC chief threw her weight behind the demand for an INDIA bloc meeting after CPM General Secretary MA Baby wrote to alliance leaders over the reported differences between the Chief Election Commissioner and the other two Election Commissioners.

Baby described the situation as unprecedented and called for an immediate meeting of the Opposition alliance.

At the press conference following the meeting, Banerjee also said she was willing to campaign for the DMK, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party and Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party if requested.

From Bengal rivalry to INDIA alliance rally?

Banerjee's role in Opposition coordination is not new. She was among the key interlocutors in efforts to bring Opposition parties together ahead of the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

At different points, there was also speculation about projecting her as the Opposition bloc's prime ministerial face, while attempts were made to explore a non-Congress, non-BJP Third Front.

Those efforts did not produce a separate national formation.

Now, another intriguing possibility has emerged.

Asked whether the INDIA alliance could hold a rally in Kolkata, where the Trinamool Congress and CPM have long been political rivals, Banerjee indicated that such an event was possible.

A joint Opposition platform in Kolkata would put TMC and CPM leaders on the same stage, underlining the increasingly complex political equations within the INDIA bloc.

A bigger national role?

Banerjee's comments do not amount to a declaration of any national leadership bid.

But her emphasis on Opposition unity, willingness to campaign for alliance partners and refusal to close the door on questions about the 2029 leadership structure indicate that she intends to remain part of the larger national conversation.

For now, her message is clear: the question of who leads the Opposition in 2029 can wait — but keeping the Opposition together cannot.
