Mumbai: Overnight rains retard proceedings

Mumbai, Sep 20 (IBNS): Heavy rains, which belted Mumbai overnight on Tuesday, have slowed down life in the Financial Capital of India, retarding a host of operations, reports said.

Schools have remain shut, while transport has taken a hit.

As many as 56 flights have been diverted as the main runway in Mumbai airport is yet not fully functional, NDTV reported.

The rains have inundated low lying areas, forcing the city's famous 'Dabbawalas' to call it a day.

"The over 5,000 'dabbawalas' who deliver around two lakh 'dabbas' (tiffins) a day won't be able to do so today as they returned only this morning after being stranded at railway stations," Subhash Talekar, spokesperson of the Mumbai Dabbawala Association, was quoted as saying by the network.

The MET department has predicted rainfall for the city till Friday.
