NPR-CAA: Apex court hearing expected on next Wednesday
New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre and sought a detailed response from it on the National Population Register and related issues.
The notice was issued on a petition filed by one Israrul Haque Mondal who challenged both CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and NPR linked to the controversy over non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde headed the bench.
"We issue notice to the Centre and seek a detailed response from it," the bench ruled.
According to a notification dated 31st July 2019 by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the NPR is scheduled to kick off from the coming April.
Apex court had earlier issued notice on many petitions challenging the CAA and the hearing is expected on January 22, Wednesday.
