Odisha: Two killed, 30 injured in clash at Vedanta plant

| @indiablooms | Mar 18, 2019, at 09:55 pm

Bhubaneswar, Mar 18 (UNI) Two persons were killed and more than 30 injured in a bloody clash between the security personnel of Vedanta Alumina at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district and labourers today.

Sources said labourers of Vedanta Alumina had sat on a dharna in front of the Lanjigarh plant today demanding jobs for local people.

The security personnel asked them to disperse but the agitators stayed put and tried to forcefully enter the factory.

Later, the security personnel resorted to baton-charge to disperse the mob in which over 30 people were injured and hospitalized.

When the news spread, the people of the nearby villages joined the labourers and attacked the security personnel. The agitators also set fire to some rooms of the plant.

Among the killed is a security personnel. All the injured were admitted to the plant's hospital.

The district administration rushed to the spot and clamped Section 144 of the CrPC around the plant area and deployed adequate security personnel to prevent any further deterioration of law and order.

The Odisha unit of BJP condemned the attack on the villagers by the Vedanta security personnel and alleged that the incident reflected a complete breakdown of law-and-order in the state.

BJP state vice-president Sameer Mohanty said it was most unfortunate that the incident happened time and again when the chief minister held the home portfolio.
