Opposition demands Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe Rafale Deal
New Delhi, Aug 10 (IBNS): Taking on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government, the Opposition on Friday demanded the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe into the buying of 36 fighter jets from France or Rafale deal, which the Congress called a scam by the Centre, media reports said.
Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Friday said in the Rajya Sabha that the "Rafale deal is the world's biggest scam".
A huge face-off between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress unfolded recently in the parliament with Rahul alleging that the present government inked the Rafale deal to benefit a particular industrialist.
Also the Congress president had said the BJP government bought 36 Rafale jets from France at a price higher than that was fixed during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime.
The country's principal opposition country even demanded a full breakup of the price at which the deal was signed. However, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had denied to reveal the details owing to the secrecy of the pact.
Rahul even had said in the parliament that French President Emmanuel Macron told him that the deal had no secrecy.
However, the Congress president's statement was refuted by French Embassy by issuing a statement to cite an India Today interview of their President and affirmed that the deal was sensitive and hence the details cannot be revealed.
