Resignations rain in Congress to give Rahul 'free hand' to constitute new team

New Delhi, June 28 (IBNS): Several key Congress leaders have resigned from their positions after the party's head of the legal, human rights and RTI cells Vivek Tankha resigned from all posts, giving party president Rahul Gandhi "a free hand" to constitute his new team.

Media reports said two working presidents of the party in Delhi and Telangana and 120 other office bearers across the country have put in their papers.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Sheila Dikshit dissolved all the 280 Block Congress Committees in Delhi with 'immediate effect'.

Dikshit took this decision keeping in line with the report submitted by the five-member fact finding committee constituted for the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

Following the dismal performance of his party in the Lok Sabha elections, Congress president took responsibility and said he would quit from his post. He has said the Congress Working Committee would need to chose a new leader who is not from the Gandhi family to take the party forward.

At a meeting with Haryana Congress leaders yesterday, Rahul said he had quit "taking full responsibility" for the party's performance. He said: "I cannot ask others to resign too. It is up to them if they want to take responsibility."

Announcing his decision to resign, Tankha said: "We all should submit our resignations from party positions and give Rahul-ji a free hand to choose his team. I welcome Mr Kamal Nath's statement to that effect. I unequivocally submit my resignation as AICC Dept chairman Law, RTI and HR. Party cannot afford a stalemate for too long," he said on Twitter. "Rahul-ji please make drastic changes to revive the party as a fighting force. You have the commitment and determination. Just cobble a good, acceptable and influential nation-wide team. I am with you in all situations."

Following Tankha, working president of Delhi Congress Committee Rajesh Lilothia and working president of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee Poonam Prabhakar resigned from their respective posts.
