Guwahati, Mar 29 (IBNS): Concerned over recent spurt of crimes against women, the Gauhati High Court on Thursday directed to set up fast track courts in each district in the state.

The High Court issued this direction after Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had sent a letter to the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court urging to take appropriate measures to deal with crimes against women on day by day basis.

Assam witnessed several incidents of crimes against women and children in recent period.

Recently, a minor girl was gang raped and murdered by three youths in central Assam’s Nagaon district, which triggered massive protests across the state.

On Wednesday night, a 6-year-old minor girl was raped by a youth at Khetri area, outskirts of Guwahati.

Later, police had arrested the culprit.

Over 17,000 rape cases have been registered in the state in past a decade.
