Srinagar-Jammu highway closed due to landslides

Srinagar, Apr 6 (UNI) The national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed on Saturday afternoon due to fresh landslides, a traffic police official said here.

Traffic was plying from Srinagar to Jammu on the highway on Saturday, which will remain closed for any civilian traffic on Sunday, following ban by the authorities to allow free and safe movement of security force convoy. Only one-way traffic is allowed on the highway, for the past two years.

''We have suspended traffic on the highway this afternoon, following landslides at Anokhifall area,'' the official told UNI.

He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) have pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to remove the landslides and restore traffic.

However, there was major confusion among the residents living on both sides of the highway as to how to reach their offices, educational institutions, shops and other works.

The authorities had banned civilian traffic on the highway twice in a week on Sunday and Wednesday for security reasons. However, the same has evoked sharp reaction from leaders of almost all mainstream parties, besides separatists, traders, transporters and common people.
