State can't challenge central act, SC tells West Bengal government on Aadhaar issue

New Delhi/Kolkata, Oct 30 (IBNS): In a major setback to the Mamata Banerjee government on the Aadhaar issue, the Supreme Court on Monday said the state cannot challenge a central government act, as the West Bengal government moved the top court against the Centre's directive which makes it mandatory to link the 12-digit unique identification number to all social welfare schemes, media reports said.

The SC told the WB government that a chief minister can challenge the central act in her individual capacity but not any state government.

Banerjee even dared the central government by saying she will not link her phone number to Aadhaar.

The Centre on Wednesday extended the deadline for linking the Aadhaar to all programmes from December 31, 2017 to March 31, 2018.

However, the extension of the deadline is applicable to only to those who do not have the Aadhaar card or in the process of enrolling.
