Pudukottai, Apr 8 (UNI): Tension prevailed in Aranthangi town of Pudukottai district, after unidentified miscreants allegedly vandalized the statue of social activist and rationalist leader EV Ramasamy, also popularly called as “Periyar” here on Monday.

Police said the miscreants cut off the head of the statue erected in the year 1998 near the government hospital in the wee hours.

On receiving information, senior revenue and police officials inspected the statue.

Police men were deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident, after several numbers of activists of Dravidar Kazhagam, DMK and pro-Tamil outfits staged a road roko agitation demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.

A case has been registered in this connection.

The incident was reported days after Dravidar Kazhagam leader K.Veeramani kicked up controversy by making derogatory remarks against Hindu culture and Hindu deity Lord Krishna during an event organized by the party in Chennai. His comments received strong protests from various Hindu outfits.

Veeramani was booked by Central Crime Branch Police under various sections of the IPC for making derogatory remarks based on the complaints from the Hindu Makkal Katchi.
