Those dropped from Assam NRC must get fair chance to prove themselves : SC
New Delhi, July 31 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that those dropped out from the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam on the ground of nationality, must get a fair chance to prove their claims.
According to media reports, the top court said the document released on Monday was just a draft and can not form the basis of any action against anyone by the authorities.
The Supreme Court's observation came in response to Attorney General KK Venugopal's requested for issuing orders for no coercive action unless full opportunity is granted to everyone.
The updated NRC for Assam, which was released on Monday, excluded the names of more than 40 lakh people, triggering a huge controversy and criticism.
The apex court said made it clear that the legal process will have to be followed after giving due opportunity to those whose names are missing.
It also asked the Centre to lay down the standard operating procedure on NRC and submit it for approval.
The next date of hearing is August 16.
