Thousands of supporters gather in Chennai to pay tribute to Karunanidhi

Chennai, Aug 8 (IBNS): Thousands of supporters gathered outside Rajaji Hall in Chennai on Wednesday to pay their tributes to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) patriarch, M Karunanidhi, who passed away a day ago.

Karunanidhi, a five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu who had switched to politics from screenwriting, died at an age of 94.

He passed away at 6-10 pm, Kauvery Hospital in Chennai where he was admitted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi already arrived in Chennai to pay his last respect to Karunanidhi.

Several other political leaders like Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will also be present during the last rites, media report said.

The country is observing a national mourning day on Wednesday due to the demise of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
