On Wednesday, a local court in Guwahati granted the bail and directed the ULFA’s general secretary not to leave Assam without court permission.

After 18 years, Bangladesh government on November 11 handed over the general secretary of ULFA to India.

Anup Chetia was arrested from a house in Mohammedpur area outskirts of Dhaka on December 21, 1997 under the Foreigners Act and the Passports Act for illegally carrying foreign currencies and a satellite phone.

The top separatist ULFA leader was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by a Bangladeshi court and was being held at Kashimpur Jail in the country.

On November, the CBI had arrested Chetia and he was produced before a court in Guwahati on Nov 18.

The court had sent Anup Chetia to judicial custody on Nov 23 and the lawyer of the ULFA’s general secretary had filed bail petition to the court of four cases registered against him.

“Half of my life was spent fighting for the people of Assam and Assamese community. Now I will look forward for cultural-socio development of the Assamese community,” Anup Chetia said after being released from jail.
