West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembers Mother Teresa on death anniversary

Kolkata, Sept 5 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday remembered Mother Teresa on her 21st death anniversary.

"Mother Teresa (Saint Teresa of Calcutta) passed away on this day in 1997, after a lifetime of service for the poorest of the poor. Sincerest tribute to her. In her memory, the @UN declared this day as the International Day of Charity," Banerjee tweeted.

Mother Teresa, known in the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary.

She was born in Skopje (now the capital of Macedonia), then part of the Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire.

After living in Macedonia for eighteen years she moved to Ireland and then to India, where she lived for most of her life.

Teresa received a number of honours, including the 1962 Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

She was canonised (recognised by the church as a saint) on 4 September 2016, and the anniversary of her death (5 September) is her feast day.

She passed away on Sept 5, 1997.
