Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies' out of Oscars race, UK's 'Santosh' makes it to final 15

Filmmaker Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies', which was India's official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category, is out of the Oscars race, as per the latest list of 15 movies released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The list, however, features British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri's Santosh.

Indian actress Shahana Goswami plays the lead role in the movie.

The movie is representing the UK and it will compete with 14 other films for a spot in the final five.

The final Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17.

The Academy said films from 85 countries and regions were fighting for the top five spots in the category.

What do we know about Laapataa Ladies?

The movie, which was released in India on March 1, is produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures, and Jio Studios.

It is directed by Kiran Rao.

The movie, which is set in rural India and tells the story of two newly-wed brides who got swapped during a train ride, featured actors Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam.

The Kiran Rao-directed movie's world premiere occurred at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
