After Virat Kohli, Ravi Shastri too throws weight behind Rohit to captain T20 India side

Dubai/UNI: After outgoing Team India Captain Virat Kohli, departing Head Coach Ravi Shastri on Monday threw his weight behind Rohit Sharma by saying the Mumbaikar is all set to take over the job after the T20 World Cup.

"I think in Rohit you have a very capable guy. He has won so many IPLs and he is the vice-captain of Team India. He is ready in the wings to take that job," he told reporters in the post-match press conference against Namibia.

At the toss, Kohli also had thrown the weight behind Rohit to take up the captaincy in the shortest format of the game by saying that he was already in the helm of affairs, having led the side in IPL and Team India in his absence.

Rohit has a prolific record as captain of Team India in the absence of Kohli in international matches and IPL history. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians have won the IPL title five times and Team India 15 out of 19 T20Is.

His average as captain stands at an average of 41.88 percent, after accumulating 712 runs, which is 9 points higher than his overall aggregate.

Shastri also backed the idea of having two captains for T20s and Tests. "I think multiple captains is not such a bad thing because of the bubble and so much cricket being played, the players need to be rotated around and given the space they need to spend some time with their families and see their parents.

"When a guy doesn't go home for six months he might have his family with him but you have parents and other family and if you don't get a chance to see them, it's not easy at all, so I think it's not such a bad thing," he said.

Replying to a query, Shastri admitted the over-dependence on batting-allrounder Hardik Pandya has been a problem. To overcome it, he suggested selection of top order players who could bowl a bit.

"In the past, it has always been that India boasted of one or two players in the top order who could bowl. Unfortunately, we do not have too many now. It will help if one or two players at the top who can bowl," he said.

Rahul Dravid is all set to take over the mantle from Shastri in India's upcoming series against New Zealand, which will begin on November 17.
