Asia Cup: Bangladesh defeat Sri Lanka by 23 runs to remain in the contest
Winning the coin toss and batting first, the Bangladeshi batsmen put up a challenging 147 runs for the loss of 7 wickets despite a slow and bad start.
At the two over mark, the men in green were 2 wickets down while managing only two runs. However fluent and conventional stroke play from Sabbir Rahman bailed them out.
Rahman hit a fluent 80 off 54 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and three sixes. He was ably aided by Shakib Al-Hasan who chipped in with 32 off 34 deliveries.
Shakib and Sabbir stitched together a partnership of 82 runs for the fourth wicket to take their team's score past the 100-run mark.
Though they kept on losing wickets, a late surge from Mahmudullah Riyad (23 runs off 12 balls) took their score to 147.
For Sri Lanka, Dushmantha Chameera was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets. Captain Angelo Mathews and Nuwan Kulasekara chipped in with a wicket each.
Chasing the score, Sri Lanka had a brisk start but lost Dilshan for 12.
Shehan Jayasuriya and Dinesh Chandimal formed a 56-run partnership for the second wicket but once the latter got out, it was curtains for the visitors.
With regular wickets falling at both the ends, Sri Lanka slumped from 76 for the loss a wicket to 117 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.
Al-Amin Hossain was the highest wicket taker for Bangladesh with three scalps.
Shakib chipped in with two, while Mustafizur, Mashrafe Mortaza and Mahmudullah accounted for a piece each.
Sabbir picked up the Man of the Match award.
