Despite Kohli-Pujara show, India bowled out for 187 in Jo'burg

Luck seemed to favour India at the beginning when Kohli had won the toss and without giving a second thought, opted for bat.

The innings began on a similar note for India as both the openers, Murali Vijay and KL Rahul, started slow and were dismissed cheaply.

Pujara, who consumed more than 50 balls to get to his first run, looked the most reassuring among the Indian batters.

He along with Indian skipper Virat Kohli, weathered the early storm and resurrected the Indian innings which looked precarious at 13 for the loss of two wickets.

Kohli, though not in his usual flowing self, hit a half century after a reprieve by the Proteas fielders.

However, the Indian captain's innings (54) was cut short by AB de Villiers who pouched a catch at third slip.

A patient Pujara also reached a half century but departed soon after reaching the landmark.

Ajinkya Rahane, who came in for Rohit Sharma in this match, failed to pile up a significant score as he was dismissed for just nine runs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has been considerably good with bat, provided a rearguard with a handy 30 lower down the order.

Kagiso Rabada was the most successful bowler for South Africa with a bowling figure of 3/39. Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander and Andile Phehlukwayo shared 2 wickets each.

Lungisani Ngidi accounted for Virat Kohli's wicket. The young pacer conceded 27 runs.

After getting reduced to a poor total, India struck South Africa early by picking up Aiden Markram for just 2.

South Africa have scored 6/1 at stumps on day 1.
