Spanish second tier game postponed due to coronavirus outbreak in Fuenlabrada squad
Madird/Xinhua: The Spanish second division tie between Deportivo la Coruna and Fuenlabrada due to be played on Monday was postponed after six members of the Fuenlabrada squad and three of the club's backroom staff tested positive for COVID-19, authorities reported on Tuesday.
However, the postponement could not make any change to the fact that Deportivo, former Spanish champions, already dropped to the third division after wins for relegation rivals Albacete and Lugo over Cadiz and Mirandes respectively.
The news of the positive tests broke after the Fuenlabrada squad had flown to La Coruna and the game was postponed by the Spanish Superior Sports Committee, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga two hours before kick-off.
"It is the solution that best protects the health of the players and the integrity of the competition," informed La Liga and the RFEF in a release.
The remaining matches of the day proceeded as planned, with the Deportivo-Fuenlabrada game to be played at a date to be confirmed.
