The Ashes: England face challenge in Manchester as Smith hits mesmerising 211

Manchester: England are facing a challenge from the visitors as Australian batsman Steve Smith scored a mesmerising double hundred in the fourth Test match of The Ashes here on Friday.

Australia declared their first innings at 497/8.

Smith, who anchored the entire Australian innings, scored 211 off 319 balls. He has hit 24 fours and two sixes.

Marnus Labuschagne and Tim Paine scored 67 and 58 respectively.

Mitchell Starc scored a fifty lower down the innings as he remained unbeaten at 54 while Nathan Lyon scored not out 26.

At stumps on day two, England scored 23/1 in 10 overs.

Rory Burns and Craig Overton remained unbeaten at 15 and 3 respectively.
