Nanchang (China): As many as 17 people were killed and 22 others sustained injuries early Sunday morning, following a severe road accident in Nanchang County, east China's Jiangxi Province.

"The accident caused 17 deaths, 22 people were injured, the injured have been sent to the hospital," state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing local authorities.

The injured have been sent to hospital for treatment. The cause of the accident is under investigation, according to the local authority.

The police said the area was experiencing "foggy weather", AFP reported.

"Driving visibility is poor, there is low visibility, which can easily cause traffic accidents," it said.

In its traffic advisory, police advised commuters to pay attention to fog lights and drive carefully, asking them not to change lanes and overtake, the AFP report said.

"Please pay attention to fog lights... slow down, drive carefully, keep a safe distance from the car in front, avoid pedestrians, do not change lanes and overtake," it added.
