At least 10 people, including a child, died after a fire broke out at a resort near Inani Beach in Cox’s Bazar, a coastal city in Bangladesh, on Saturday, media reports said.

Preliminary information suggests that the victims were tourists visiting the area, senior Fire Service official Dolan Acharya told The Dhaka Tribune.

Six of the victims were identified as Israt Jahan Maliha, 30, and Milita Mehejabin Alvi, 23, from Banasree in Dhaka; Laila Jahan Nabila, 27, and Nafista Mim, 27, from Khilgaon in Dhaka; and Fariha Kabir, 33, and Fayizan Ahmed, 5, from Chuadanga.

According to local media reports, the victims were initially taken to Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital.

Around 30 people were reportedly present at the resort when the fire broke out. Four to five people managed to escape, while the whereabouts and condition of the others remained unclear, the newspaper reported.

Two fire service units from Ukhiya Fire Station brought the blaze under control by 8:15 am, according to local media reports.

Police and emergency services are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
