40 killed, 30 injured in suicide blasts in Kabul's Shiite cultural centre

Kabul, Dec 28 (IBNS) :  At least 40 people were killed and dozens injured  by multiple bomb blasts targeting a cultural center in a Shiite neighborhood of western Kabul Thursday.

Local media reports quoted Nasrat Rahimi, deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry as saying that women and students were among the casualties of the attack.

Reports said  a suicide bomber wearing a vest targeted  the cultural centre.

The second  blast was caused by a sticky bomb the attacker had placed on a wall.

Rahimi said that the blasts were aimed at the Shi'ite Tabayan cultural center.

He said a suicide bomber entered the building and blew himself up during a crowded ceremony marking the 38th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Rahimi said there were two other explosions on the street outside of the building as people were gathering to help those injured by the first blast.

He said the smaller explosions outside of the building did not kill anyone.

The Taliban denied responsibility for the blast, which comes days after a Christmas Day suicide bombing at the country’s main intelligence agency.

The Islamic State’s local affiliate claimed that earlier attack, which left six people dead and several wounded.
