Kabul, Apr 12 (IBNS): At least eight people, including Ali Shams Dost, the district governor of Khwaja Omari district of eastern Ghazni in Afghanistan, were killed in a Taliban attack, local media reports said on Thursday.

The incident took place early Thursday at around 2 am.

According to Tolo News, the militants attack the Governor's residence, killing the latter along with seven other security personnel.

Additionally, nine other policemen were wounded.

The militants also resorted to arson, setting fire to the Governor's compound.

Confirming the news, an official statement read, "Ali Shams Dost was killed with seven other policemen during the clashes and some parts of the district governor’s compound was also torched.”

It said that in retaliation, 27 Taliban militants were gunned down in airstrikes.

“After the attack the forces called for air support and 27 Taliban were killed during the airstrikes and clashes,” it added.

Reacting to the development, the Taliban reportedly said that it has captured the district, a claim which was rejected by local law enforcers.
