Afghanistan: Taliban destroy statue of Hazara leader Abdul Ali Mazari they killed in 1995

Kabul: Taliban insurgents have allegedly destroyed the statue of Hazara leader Abdul Ali Mazari in Bamiyan region of Afghanistan, a human rights activist said on Wednesday.

Taliban insurgents had killed Abdul Ali Mazari in 1995.

Picture of the now destroyed statue has gone viral on the social media platforms.

Sharing the treatment of Taliban towards the statue, human rights activist Saleem Javed tweeted: "So Taliban have blown up slain #Hazara leader Abdul Ali Mazari’s statue in Bamiyan. Last time they executed him, blew up the giant statues of Buddha and all historical and archeological sites. Too much of ‘general amnesty’."

Bamiyan is interesting the same region where the insurgents had destroyed Budhha statues in 2001.

Who is Abdul Ali Mazari?

Mazari was an ethnic Hazara, and believed the solution to the internal divisions in Afghanistan was in a federal system of governance, with each ethnic group having specific constitutional rights and able to govern their own land and people, Wikipedia website read.

He was murdered by the Taliban in 1995, and posthumously given the title ‘Martyr Of National Unity’ in 2016.

Hazaras are considered to be one of the most oppressed groups in Afghanistan who have been several time allegedly targeted by Taliban in the past.

On Sunday, the Taliban completed their takeover of Afghanistan by entering Kabul, which led to the collapse of the US-backed civilian government.After taking over Afghanistan, the Taliban promised that the media would be able to work in the Central Asian country without interference.
