Bangladesh: Death warrant issued against Jamaat leader

Dhaka, Feb 19 (IBNS) The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) here on Thursday issued death warrant for Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman in connection with a war crimes case.

"The International Crimes Tribunal-2 issued the warrant after receiving the full text of the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death penalty of Kamaruzzaman for his crimes against humanity during 1971," The Daily Star reported.

The copies of the death warrant, wrapped in red cloth, have been sent to Dhaka district magistrate, prison authorities and secretaries to the home and law ministries, Mustafizur Rahman, registrar of the ICT was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The tribunal-2 on May 9, 2013 had awarded death penalty to the leader.

The Supreme Court on Nov 3, 2014, where

Kamaruzzaman had appealed against the verdict, also upheld the death penalty given to him for the mass killing at Sohagpur in Sherpur on July 25, 1971.
